It is believed that this parish was one of those founded by King Alfonso VI after the Reconquest of Toledo. The temple presented a state of practically total ruin in the fourteenth century, except for its tower, undertaking a total restoration paid for by Don Gonzalo Ruíz de Toledo, Count of Orgaz. This character is key in the history of the church, since he is the main protagonist of the work of El Greco that is exhibited here, “The Burial of the Lord of Orgaz”, and is buried in the temple.
